2. About WEM Motion

This section provides an overview of Web Experience Management Motion version 2.0

WEM Motion version 2.0 provides you with a powerful migration tool that helps you to:

  • Export Content from Web Experience Management (WEM)

  • Import content to WEM

  • Migrate content to a more recent WEM release

  • Backup your content to an offline connector

2.1. New Features

WEM Motion is a major step from previous versions, maintaining the same functionality with a overhauled implementation for significant performance gains.

WEM Motion version 2.0 also includes the following new features:

2.1.1. Introduced the concept of System Item

By default, items marked as system items are ignored. This prevents migrations from changing these items (for instance, replace WEM 10.5 DPM Page content type with an older version).

2.1.2. Multiple CDS are now supported

WEM Motion now supports installation in architectures with multiple CDS per stage

2.1.3. New offline connector format

The offline connector is not compatible with the offline packages from previous WEM Motion versions. However, both WEM Motion versions can be maintained simultaneously for a period of time where the old backups are still necessary.

2.1.4. New Object Types Support

WEM Motion now supports migration of the following Object Types:

  • Taxonomies

  • Categories — although Categories are deprecated in WEM 16.0 in favor Labels

  • Labels — on WEM 16.0 and onward, the migration of Labels is supported

2.1.5. References between Content Instance and Content Instance Pages

References between Content Instance and Content Instance Pages are now taken into account.

2.1.6. Added support for WEM 16 connector

Migrations can now be done to and from WEM 16.

2.1.7. Migration to Delivery Stages

Content can be migrated to delivery directly, maintaining the publishing status. This feature only works for versions 10.5 or later and is dependent on the installation of a cumulative patch for WEM. Please contact OpenText™ support if you intend on using this feature.

2.1.8. Connector monitoring

Connectors now have a health endpoint that can be used for monitoring. The engine interface will also provide information about the connection with connectors.

2.1.9. Out of the box navigators for WEM

Motion now includes a set of pre-configured navigators that expose existing WEM content tree.

2.1.10. Email Report

WEM Motion can send an email report at the end of each job execution.

2.1.11. New Job types

Since WEM Motion 2.5, besides Migration Jobs, there are also Deletion, Comparison, Computation and Script Jobs.

2.1.12. Auditing / Traceability features

Since WEM Motion 2.5, it is possible to audit / trace all changes in WEM Motion, as well as migrated items.

2.1.13. Added support for WEM 16.2 connector

Since WEM Motion 2.6.0 migrations can now be done to and from WEM 16.2.

2.1.14. Added support for WEM 16.2.1 connector

Since WEM Motion 2.6.2 migrations can now be done to and from WEM 16.2.

2.2. Improvements

WEM Motion version 2.0 also includes the following improvements:

2.2.1. Improved installation process

The installation process has been revised. It has a much simpler installation process. Offering different architecture configurations that greatly reduce the complexity.

2.2.2. Single Connector Architecture

Option to install a single connector that communicates with every stage CDS in a WEM instance.

2.2.3. Single Connector Install Binary for all WEM Versions

In WEM Motion 1.x, there was a different binary for each WEM version but from version 2.0 and onward the same binary can be used to connect to any WEM Version.

2.2.4. Standalone Installation

For both engine and connector it is now possible to install the software as a standalone process. Deploy to tomcat is still supported for both cases.

2.2.5. Abort/Resume Jobs

It is now possible to abort a job and resume it from the same point afterwards.

2.2.6. Improved transformation scripts

Transformation scripts now offer a jQuery like syntax.

2.2.7. Faster import/read from source

Content is now moved between environments using streaming which greatly reduces the connectors memory footprint.

2.2.8. Improved computation

The computation is now faster with a significant reduction in the memory footprint. Improved conflict resolution policies during computation cycle.

2.2.9. Consolidated interface

The interface has been revamped, maintaining a similar UX. There is now only one web interface in the engine allowing you to navigate any connector configured.

3. Discontinued Functionality

3.1. Move Deletions to / from offline connector not Supported

Moving deletions to / from offline connector is no longer supported in version 2.0.

3.2. Weblogic not Supported

Dropped support for installing both engine and connectors as a WEM extension on weblogic in version 2.0.

4. Supported Environments and Compatibility

This section provides details on supported platforms and version information.

4.1. Supported Systems

WEM Motion 2.0 engine and connectors both support the same Operating Systems than WEM.

5. Support Matrix

5.1. Hardware

The minimum hardware requirements for the Motion Engine are:

  • Hard-Drive -- Minimum 500 megabytes free disc space are required to run the Motion Engine. This is enough space to extract the ZIP file and to write log files. This amount does not take into consideration the space needed for the database

  • Memory -- Two (2) gigabytes of Java heap space is enough for WEM Motion to handle migrations of approximately 1 million items.

5.2. WEM / VCM Versions

Motion WEM Connector supports VCM 7.5 to WEM 16.7.1, both Management (read / write) and Delivery (read only) stages.

5.3. Databases

WEM Motion database supports the following databases:
